JEB Teacher Diploma in IT Skills
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will have a good knowledge and understanding of:
- The different parts of InformationTechnology equipment and software available Organising computer resources for practical use by students
- Producing teaching materials and resources for use in a teaching environment
- Recognising the problems of managingtechnological education resources
- General software packages such as Word Processing, Spreadsheets etc.
Prerequisites:
Students must be at least 20 years of age on completion of the course Hold 5 passes in their Leaving Certification, one being English must have good knowledge in at least one of the following:
- Word Processing
- Spreadsheet
- Databases
- Graphics
- Programming
ECDL would be desirable
Candidates who already hold a Teaching Diploma are automatically given exemption from the Principles of Teaching Paper if it has a recency of 3 years.

Course Content:
The JEB Teacher Trainer Diploma in Information Technology Skills is comprised of three modules:
- Principles of Teaching and Training
- Information Technology Skills
- Applied Principles of Teaching
PRINCIPLES OF TEACHING AND TRAINING
This syllabus covers some of the most useful principles involved in teaching and learning. The objectives are to certify that the candidates are able to show:
- Knowledge of different teaching approaches to suit different age or ability
- Knowledge of different learning processes
- Understanding of the teacher’s and student’s roles as they affect the learning process.
As part of the syllabus, candidates are required to undertake five hours of teaching practice, composed of one hours observation followed by four hours of teaching practice - two of which must be supervised by a qualified teacher. All candidates are required to sit an examination paper - 1 hour, 30 minutes, plus 10 minutes reading time.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SKILLS
This syllabus is used to certify that candidates can teach information communications technology skills. The objectives are to certify that the candidates are able to:
- Appreciate the role of information equipment and software and it’s appropriate use as a learning resource in an education environment
- Recognise the problems of managing technological education resources
- Demonstrate a knowledge, understanding and competence in:
- Different parts of information technology equipment, the range of available equipment and the role of software
- Using a computer for input, storage, processing, output and despatch of both numeric data and test information
- Using general software packages such as word processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphics, desktop publishing, presentation software
- Produce teaching materials and resources for use in Information Technology training/teaching situations
As part of the syllabus, candidates must demonstrate the ability to devise teaching materials for use with three applications. Candidates must also demonstrate practical competence in carrying out a list of functions in one other application.
All candidates are required to sit an examination paper - 1 hour, plus 10 minutes reading time.
APPLIED PRINCIPLES OF TEACHING
Candidates are required to prepare a teaching project, as follows, and to teach a lesson from this project.
The Teaching project must contain:
- Documentation to enable a training needs analysis to establish trainees’ current level of knowledge, skill and understanding, to be taken
- A scheme of work for a course lasting a minimum of 30 hours
- A minimum of two lessons covering a total teaching time of at least 2 hours on a topic selected from the scheme of work
- Teaching materials for one of the lessons (minimum of one hour’s teaching) to consist of at least:
Student task
- A student instructional handout
- A visual aid e.g. OHP, slides, charts etc
- A summary of approximately 150 words giving;
- A description of the teaching/learning strategies and assessment methods employed in the teaching project and the reasons for their use.
- An explanation of how these strategies provide an effective programme of learning by referring to relevant learning theories and principles
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
In addition to attending lectures, approximately 100 hours are necessary outside of lecture time, in order to complete the Scheme of Work, necessary assignments and teaching practice.
